THE ENGINEERING HERITAGE SKILLS INITIATIVE

The Engineering Heritage Skills Initiative (EHSI) is a partnership project of Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums and the North of England Civic Trust which got together to submit a bid for funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). In May 2010 the HLF awarded £17 million to 54 projects that created 800 new placements funded by educational bursaries in heritage settings across the UK. EHSI was the lucky recipient of just under half a million pounds which funded 24 traineeships over a three-year period in the north-east of England between 2011 and 2014.

The project received a further boost in 2012 when the HLF made further funding available which paid for a fourth year for eight trainees in the north-east and 16 placements in Yorkshire over a two-year period. Completion of the project was extended to March 2015.

TIGER NUMBER SEVEN

In late March, the Deutsches Panzermuseum at Munster put on display its newly-acquired Tiger 1, the seventh of the breed in the world and the only one in Germany. We understand that it was constructed from salvaged parts as a static exhibit and is currently missing many of its vital internal organs.

MOGGIE LCV HITS 60

This year sees the 60th anniversary of the Morris Minor Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV), a milestone which will be celebrated at the Heritage Motor Centre on 10-11 August. An event is being organised by the Minor LCV Register, which is dedicated solely to the preservation, use, restoration and historical study of all Minor LCVs (both Austin and Morris) in any condition and wherever they are.

It is hoped that the two-day event will host the largest-ever gathering of Minor LCVs in preservation in one place. Alongside ex-GPO/PO vans in all variants and liveries, the organisers expect to attract a gown van, a Minor milk float, various caravanettes, an ice cream van and, of course, military Minors.

YORKSHIRE WARTIME EXPERIENCE

Among the vehicles booked to appear at the Yorkshire Wartime Experience (www.ywe-event.info/ ), 5-7 July 2013, are two particularly interesting vehicles, say the organisers, a 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III that was used by Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery during and after WW2, and a Vickers-Carden-Loyd Utility Tractor also from 1936.

Caption: The 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III comes with documentation detailing its history and association with ‘Monty’.

Old Buckenham Airfield, Norfolk, is delighted to announce that it’s new military event, Military Revival (4-6 October 2013), has agreed an alliance with Bunker Bash, one of the UK’s most popular military shows. Bunker Bash has been held for the last six years, attracting huge crowds and filling 17 acres with military displays.
