LEND-LEASE VALENTINE DISCOVERED

A recovery team led by MV collector Jacek Kopczynski from Lodz in Poland recently pulled a Valentine Mk IX from the muddy backwaters of the Warta River. The tank, built in 1943 and one of around 2000 supplied to the Soviets, is believed to have fallen through the ice while transiting western Poland in January 1945.

Following the two-day recovery operation, the Valentine was judged to be in excellent restorable condition.

THE STARS OF SANDSTONE FESTIVAL

You may be aware that South Africa's Sandstone Estates has, among many other things, an extensive military vehicle collection. Details can be found on its website at www.sandstone-estates.com.

Sandstone is a working, farming estate, but once a year it open its doors to enthusiasts wishing to see and get hands-on experience of its collection. The 2013 event is billed as The Stars of Sandstone Festival and, as in previous years, military equipment will feature alongside the steam railway, agricultural vehicles, vintage vehicles and more. Starting on Saturday 4 May and ending on Saturday 12 May 2013, the programme is determined to some extent by the interests of the visitors.

MONSTER REO

JIMMY PHOTO BLOG

GMC CCKW enthusiast, Ian Garbutt, whose 352 was featured in September 2012’s Opening Shot, has set himself the goal of trying to record all the 'Jimmys' that have been seen in the UK in recent years. To that end he has started a photo blog and, as we went to press, had already logged an impressive 299 vehicles.

However, Ian believes there are still more CCKWs out there, so, if your vehicle isn’t among the 299 already captured, get in touch with him via his internet page at http://cckwphotoblog.logspot.co.uk/.
