ALL IN THE FAMILLEUREUX

The start of The Carrier Story series in February’s CMV prompted Dutch reader, Harald Bus, to e-mail a scan of a vintage postcard showing a pair of Carrier-type vehicles in use by the Belgian Army in the thirties. The vehicles are a Vickers design produced under licence by Familleureux in Belgium and known as the Utility B. Powered by a rear-mounted 3285cc engine, there were several versions including one with crew seats suspended on the hull sides, but the pair illustrated appear to be light artillery tractors.

The Vickers Familleureux Utility B also served with the Dutch; 20 were shipped to Java for the Royal Dutch-East Indies Army but an additional batch of 30 scheduled for delivery in May 1940 was captured by the Germans.

SCHWIMMER IN THE SNOW

You may have expected us to have been deluged with pics of MVs in the recent snow, but we weren’t. Nevertheless, what the incoming material lacked in quantity it made up for in quality… here is Tim Hewitt’s well-travelled 1943 VW Type 166 Schwimmwagen. It was captured in Italy by the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (the other BEF!) and subsequently taken back to Brazil along with two others for assessment (see what we mean about being ‘well-travelled’). As a matter of interest, Brazil was the only South American country to send troops to fight in WW2, and provided in excess of 25,000 personnel.

DODGE WITH A DIFFERENCE

Here is an interesting variation on the Dodge WC54 theme, a vehicle in use post-war by the military police in Stuttgart, Germany. Unfortunately, we can tell you no more except that just visible in the background of the original photo are a couple of white-topped Jeeps, presumably also MP vehicles. Does anyone have any more information or photos of them?

NOTHING NEW

As if to prove that there’s nothing new about tanks crushing cars, here’s a photo from the City of Toronto archives captioned ‘University Avenue, Armistice Day 1918’ and showing a Mk IV tank getting the best of a… well, we’re not sure what it was!
